...hopefully a wise one. So with my hour and some change daily commute and the mini being a 16 year old german car that gets abused on the regular I have done something some thought impossible. I have acquired a new vehicle.
Oppo meet the new daily, a 2008
T
oyota
avalon. In straight up old person spec, silver on silver, 150k on the clock and it’s a limited trim level so it has everything option available most of which I have no need for but I’m not complaining.
It does have a few minor issues, being an old person car it has it’s share of dents and scratches, the passenger side fender has clearcoat peeling from a previous repair, the tire light and service light are on. I don’t think those lights are any real issues but I won’t know until I put my obd scanner on it which is currently in the mini which is stuck behind a locked fence at my workplace.

Nice, my mother-in-law had a an 2007 avalon that was great. Solid power, rode nicely and all the options. You'll do well with this.

Good car fir that commute. But why are you unconcerned about the CEL? I would have thought you would not buy it until you could plug it in.

These cars are the greatest kept secret.

At that age the tire light might just mean the batteries in the TPMS sensors have died. But I admit that I would hesitate to buy a car with multiple lights on.

I could be wrong but I think it’s just an overdue oil change.

I was just thinking about these today. The frosted buttons on the center stack are so cool. And with the ride, seats, and V6, this will be a great commuter car!

If it’s a truly a service light, then it won’t be the same as a CEL . Usually means it’s due for an oil change, or it wasn’t properly reset last change. My not-mine Tacoma has one in the form of “MAINT REQ” (maintenance required)

I like how we work 10 minutes apart but have never even considered getting lunch together. We should change that. You ever had BonChon?

Okay, I get it now. Well, be sure to report back. This should be a comfy, reliable ride for a long time.

I had one of those! Hence my username, mine was an 05, I actually cried when I traded it in. That car was awesome, could’ve been better on gas but she was epic, huge trunk for whatever , carried all the homies . I seriously miss it sometimes cause my GS is sometimes space inefficient hahaha. But bro, that car is going to peace of mind, watch out for coils cause they use the m up sometimes depending on maintenance , but also if it is only an oil change it should show maintenance required light not check engine... and tint really helped the ac when I had it and it added a bit more stealth. And the car sits at 80+ with out too much of a problem. And it recommends synthetic for oil changes it didn’t like well mine didn’t.But you're going to enjoy it for those long drives, there was nothing it ever needed it in the 5 years I had it. My friends even from time to time say they miss it cause of how comfy it was with reclining seats.

There’s a part of me that wants to do a VIP Avalon, because doing that to my GS would be a waste of a rear-drive chassis.

I have seen it done looks tough, but then it detracts from the whole point of the car. I thought about it before I traded it in, but sometimes its time to move on and do something different.

Toyota camry based cars from those years (like my solaras) will have a separate service engine light (for oil changes) and a check engine light for codes. Awesome purchase though. Would love a nice avalon or lexus es 330.

Yeah, there are like a dozen cars that I want in addition to the ones I already have haha

It is so hilarious and American to buy a massive car as a DD and have the weekend toy be a Mini, but I completely support this; the Avalon is just a Costco Camry, and I love Costco ( Camries are ai ght, too).

Cool. Thanks.
They are good cars. We briefly thought about getting one. We waited until it was time to get the minivan though.

Congrats. No shame in wanting a daily that is comfortable and reliable. My mom has that same car and it belonged to her moms boss before he passed. He used to be into caddy’s and he’d buy one every few years with cash, but I think he got tired of the issues with them so he made the jump to the Toyota’s. Nice rides, I’ve driven my moms a few times to fill it up with fuel for her, and it’s a nice place to be. Plenty of pep and it’s got all the bells and whistles too.
I’m in a similar boat myself. I’ve got my over 10 year old German sedan to play with and it finally let me down almost a year ago, and I haven’t made the time to complete repairs on it. In the meantime I’m driving my Mother in laws old caddy Deville and debating what to go to for my my next daily.
Like I said, no shame in wanting something you don’t have to be bothered to fix every couple weeks. Enjoy it.

I’m supposed to look at another Fiero at some point, plus I’m planning to engine swap my GS/Aristo within the next few years, and refresh my Prelude, and pay off my TL, and I want a GS460, and an RDX, and on and on...
